Young mom struggles to find work and provide for son

Lisandra came to Reason to Give because she wants to give her son the best life possible. Lisandra is 23 and the mother of five year old Leeomar.  Although she has struggled a lot financially as a young, single mother, Lisandra has managed to raise a wonderful son and attend college.

Lisandra's story is one of triumph and tradegy. She has been forced to live in shelters at times with her son and has struggled to find work since recently moving back home to Chicago. Currently, Lisandra does not have a stable place to live and no steady income, but she is out looking for a job everyday. Despite the hardship she has endured, Lisandra graduated from Lincoln Tech College to be a medical assistant. She hopes to go back to school soon to pursue her nursing degree. Lisandra told Reason to Give that what she really wants is to have a good career so that she can better provide for her son and be a positive rolemodel for him as he grows up.

Lisandra was born and raised in Humboldt Park. She describes her community with pride and tells us that growing up here has given her a better understanding of her Puerto Rican heritage. Lisandra just hopes that the violence in Humboldt Park will end and that everyone will start taking care of the community a little more.

Lissandra told Reason to Give that she needs basic everyday items for herself and her son because right now they have next to nothing. She would also like school supplies for her son who will start school in the fall, and a computer so that she can pursue her nursing degree. At present, Lisandra travels to different local organizations everyday to use the computers to look for housing and a job. Lisandra is very grateful for any help she gets and plans to give back to the community as soon as she is back on her feet.
