In March of 2008, an accidental fire burned down the New Moms shelter. New Moms provides services and housing for homeless teenage moms, here in Humboldt Park. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's October 16th issue detailed the fire, its aftermath and how community was key to surviving this tragedy.
New Moms' president, Audalee McLoughlin, said: "Relationships were the thing that really helped pull us through." Along with Good News Bible Church, the Red Cross and Circle Urban Ministries, Firebelly got involved—tapping into our strong sense of neighborhood responsibility—using our contact lists to get the word out about New Moms' story and giving them a needed boost in donations to help them sustain their important work.
